Text Box: On February 6, 2007, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care George Smitherman visited BCCHC to announce that Black Creek CHC will receive funding for four education teams to help support people with diabetes.

Diabetes is a disease that is growing very rapidly in Ontario.  The number of people in Ontario with diabetes more than doubled in the decade between 1995 and 2005, climbing 113% from 388,999 in 1995 to 827,000 in 2005, according to the new study by Toronto
researchers.
After adjusting for population growth, the percentage of people with diabetes in the province grew by almost 70 %, rising to 9.8% from 5.2 % in one decade.

Diabetes can create a host of complications such as heart disease, blindness, kidney failure and amputation.  If one in 10 Ontarians (1.2 million people) develops diabetes, it could cripple the health care system.

This funding from the government couldn’t have come at a better time.  Its part of the
government’s early intervention strategy to give patients the tools needed manage the disease and live a healthy life.

Our team at Black Creek CHC will consist of 2 Registered Diabetes Educator Nurses and 2 Registered Dietitians.  They will be working in the community to promote prevention of the disease and focus on providing diabetics with the best health care to help empower diabetics to take control over their disease and live a healthy life.
