Text Box: International
Women’s Day Wrap-Up!

Text Box: International Women’s Day was celebrated in the Jane-Finch community on Friday, March 9th 2007 at the Driftwood Community Recreation Centre. The theme for this year was “canAIDa and beyond: HIV/AIDS, Racism, Sexism, and Human Rights.”

We recognize that women all over the world are affected by debilitating sexual and social sagas each day, and it was important to highlight the power women possess in reclaiming their lives.

It was a delight to have Sue Johanson of WTN’s “Sunday Night Sex Show” as a guest speaker, who encouraged women to get informed about social issues that will continue to have an impact on them and their children. In her usual bold yet sincere manner, Sue made it clear that we are all sexual beings who need to know about our bodies, how to protect them from disease, and how to talk to our children about sexual health issues.

The crowd was musically entertained by singing, drumming and dancing, which were performed by Firgrove PS and Westview High School students. This set the tone for the day, in which over 300 community members participated. The event featured pampering stations, where women could relax and be treated to hand henna design, beautiful nail art, hair braiding, back massage treatments with sweet-smelling aroma and last but certainly not least, sensual foot massage therapy. There were also many local organizations that displayed information for services dedicated to the women in this community.

We would like to thank all those that came out to enjoy the day, and give special thanks to those who volunteered to help make the event such a great success. We look forward to future celebrations of the women who have shaped our world and hope to have even more fun next year!

Text Box: International Day for the
Elimination Of
Racial Discrimination (IDERD)

On March 21st, 1960, over 50 black people were killed when police opened fire on a "peaceful" protest in the South African township of Sharpeville.  In 1966, the United Nations declared March 21st as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (IDERD).  A community celebration, organized jointly by BCCHC and other agencies, was held at Yorkgate Mall on Saturday, March 17 during which residents, enjoyed a program of poetry, song, dance, and fun games that helped to learn more about this important day.
