Text Box: An Invitation to Get to Know a Newcomer

Text Box: The initial results of a study by York University, Faculty of Health and Black Creek CHC are showing the reality of many newcomers who live in our community.

Text Box: The study provides information on the emotional distress of women from different countries who arrived in Toronto a few years ago. Most of the women who participated in the study had completed high school or started university in their country of origin. However, they are struggling to survive, can’t meet their basic needs and can’t obtain suitable employment. The study says that these newcomers are adapting to our community but most of them feel very isolated and with few supports.   Most immigrants would tell you that caring people made a big difference in their lives when they first arrived to our country. There are many stories of long- term friendships that started when a resident of the community welcomed a newcomer. Many residents would tell you how much they have learned about other countries and cultures they never knew before.   We go to the health centre, we send our  kids to the same schools, we read books at the same library and buy our groceries at the same supermarkets, but yet we hardly talk to each other.   Today you may have the opportunity to get to know a newcomer. Here are some suggestions on how to break the ice: maybe you could say “hello” to the person waiting besides you in our waiting room, or start a chat in the elevator with your neighbor,  or let a stressed out mother with young children know that you understand because you have been there, or offer some directions to a person that seems lost.
