Marijuana Grow Ops: A Growing HazardText Box: After the detection of grow ops in the Jane and Sheppard area last November, residents expressed concern regarding health and safety issues.   The impact of grow ops is complex and multi-faceted and range from economic costs, to the health of children, the structure of homes, environmental spin-offs, and most importantly, an impact on the safety of our neighbourhoods.  Some of these hazards include:

Public Health Hazards: Health concerns from mould, pesticides and fertilizers; chemical use and non-code venting can have serious impact on human health.

Community Safety: Grow ops are targeted by others attempting to steal the crop. These home invasions are a safety risk to neighbours. An increase of violence and criminal activities in the communities appear due to the illegal character of this business.

Electrical Hazards:  There is potential for fire to spread to neihbouring properties due to electrical bypasses, over stress on electrical systems, non-code wiring, light temperatures reaching more than 500 degrees Fahrenheit.

Structural Hazards:  Growers may make structural changes to accommodate the ducting system that is used for ventilation; this includes opening holes in the floor, ceiling, and foundations. As a result, the structure may collapse and create risk for the occupants.

Chemical Hazards: Fertilizers, pesticides, and corrosives are all chemicals used to accelerate crop growth. Reckless disposal of these chemicals into the sewer system may contaminate ground water and soil.

Environmental Hazards: High levels of carbon dioxide and monoxide, noxious fumes from chemicals, and fungus and mould resulting from excessive heat and humidity.
